Product Design - Beehive Chair

Styrotech CNC were approached by Graham Roebeck (Structural Integrity) in conjunction with David Trubridge design to machine the parts of an innovative and unique chair.

The chair, which had originally been designed in SketchUp Pro and AutoCAD LT, was taken and remodelled by the team at David Trubridge design so as to turn it initially into a Rhino file, which in turn was converted to an AlphaCam format which was able to be machined.

Using 5-axis cutting techniques, the parts were machined from Formica in order to create the components which were then assembled to create the "Beehive" chair.

The design of the chair has become well known on the internet, whilst the design itself won the 2011 "Formica Formations" Design Competition.

Having toyed with product design for some years I entered the Formica Formations competition to test my blue sky design process, and was delighted to have won and had Beehive fully realised.
